The landscape of work has changed dramatically in the last number of years. In the new world of work, no company owes you a career and no boss is responsible for your job satisfaction anymore. You need to accept ownership of your career, your skills and the timing of your moves.

If you put your career into the hands of others like your organization, your boss, your partner, even your parents, you are most likely working to achieve someone else’s dream. There is only one way you’ll achieve what you want, be it personally or professionally:

  • Think about where you want to go with your life
  • Write it down
  • Put it into a plan to get there
  • Start moving

Creating a Career Development Plan is a starting point of doing just that.

It is much like planning a road trip, you must know your likes and dislikes, where you want to end up and which roads will take you there.  Here are some helpful steps to guide you in creating a career plan tailored to your interests and ambitions.

Step 1. Know and Understand Yourself.

Make a list of the following:

  • Who you are at your core, what matters most to you?
  • What qualities make you stand out?
  • What skills do others recognise in you?
  • Where are you vulnerable or can you identify your weaknesses?
  • Where do you lack experience?
  • What are your drivers (career values)

Step 2. Define Your Career Objectives and set meaningful Goals

  • Outline the direction of your career by creating a Career Mission Statement that sets out your long-term ambition.
  • E.g. My personal career mission is to become a world class aeronautical engineer  in the commercial aviation industry.”
  • Work on a 5 – 8 year perspective because it’s hard to know what your life will look like further into the future than this.
  • Identify specific goals that are going to help you follow through this plan.

  • Specify the steps you want to take to achieve your goal.
  • Include a timetable for when you want to take your steps. Make room for external factors that could influence your plan.
  • Write down obstacles that might come up.
  • Write down steps that you can take to overcome these obstacles.
  • Remember to add the development of your Marketing tools e.g.CV, LinkedIn, Networking, your Elevator speech.
